Workshops at a Glance

Age Bias in the Job Search: Learn how to distinguish age from age bias. Gain a powerful understanding of how age is perceived in others and ourselves as well as how to address the prevailing myths you may meet in your job search.

Answering Questions About Your CORI: If you have a criminal record and are unsure of how to obtain, read or change information on your CORI, this workshop will help you get the information needed to assist you with these issues.  The facilitator will also discuss how to find employers who will work with you, and describing a criminal charge on an interview.

Avoiding Occupational Hazards: This workshop will be a discussion of how to make educated choices about careers. We will discuss how to utilize our own opinions and interests, the thoughts and experiences of others and the resources that surround us.

Confidence Building for the Job Fair: Learn techniques for managing anxiety and presenting your most confident self at job fairs and interviews.

Cover Letter Writing: Learn the basics of how to create a professional cover letter.  Come and learn about different types and styles of cover letters and find the one that’s right for you.

Drop in and Ask The Career Counselor:  Have questions about your job search?  Take advantage of this “drop-in” time to ask a career counselor for answers about anything related to the job hunt.

How to Work a Job Fair: Nobody gets jobs from job fairs, right? WRONG! Learn techniques to master job fair interactions, get employers to remember you and contact you for an interview.

I Got a Job!  Now What? You have the new job (after toiling over your resume and cover letter and nailing the interview.)! .  What can you expect?  What might the first day look like? What is the nature of anticipation?  Come explore these questions and others as we talk about transitioning back to work.

Job Search 101 Workshop: The Basics if Effective Job Search: How do you cover your bases for an effective job search? In this workshop we will provide an overview of the job search process and reference appropriate workshops for more in-depth information.

Job Seekers Networking Support Group: Out of work? Meet others in the same boat on a weekly basis. Network for information and ideas on improving your job search. This session is offered several times a month: check the calendar for dates.

Idenifying Your Skills using the SkillsScan Card Sort: What is a Skill?  Can you name and describe your skills confidently in a job interview?  Can you identify your transferable skills?  If insight into these questions interests you, this is a workshop for you!  From a deck of 64 cards you will select your preferred skill-set and receive the format to identify your professional profile.

Internet Basics (YOU MUST HAVE BASIC PC AND KEYBOARDING SKILLS):  New to the Internet? Learn how to use the Internet effectively for your job search.  Workshop is presented twice a month. Check front of calendar for dates.

Interviewing Skills Workshop: Explore interviewing strategies, commonly asked questions, tips on answering questions and how to deal with any unexpected pitfalls.

Introduction to Microsoft Word ©: Let’s start with the basics. Where are the shortcuts to center text? How do you make your font bold or change its style? Where are the commands to do bullets and numbering? Stuff like that.

Job Search Letters Workshop: How can good writing attract a potential employer?  See examples of creative, well written cover letters, Thank you letters, Job inquiry letters, Informational Interview request letters and more!

Low Cost and No Cost Healthcare: The health care system is changing in Massachusetts in 2007.  A representative from the Harbor Health/Neponsett Community Health Center will visit The Work Place to give a presentation on the changes that are coming, focusing on keeping you well informed of your no-cost or low-cost healthcare options for the 2007-2008 year.

Making your Resume Web-friendly ( YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BRING A MS WORD RESUME ON DISK TO THIS WORKSHOP): Take this step-by-step workshop to learn how to make your Microsoft Word Resume web-friendly.

Online Applications Made Easy:  Are you feeling confused and frustrated by the new online application process?  Do you know what employers are looking for?  This workshop will offer techniques and insight into the process, providing you with the knowledge you need to successfully complete online applications through instruction and completing a sample application.

Outside the Box: Ideas for Your Career (Re)search Workshop: Learn some creative approaches to reframe your approach to the job/career search process! In this workshop we will discuss new and resourceful strategies for success.

Positive Thinking for Success: This workshop is designed to teach participants to identify and change negative thinking patterns.  Participants are given tools to assist them in building and/or maintaining a positive attitude, self-confidence and motivation.

Practice Interviews:  Need practice talking about your skills and abilities? Want a professional’s feedback on your interviewing skills? Bring your resume and a job description and sign-up to interview with a representative from Oliver Wyman.

REAL BENEFITS SCREENING: The State of Massachusetts has passed a new health care reform law which requires all adults to have health insurance. When you file your taxes next year, if you do not have health insurance, you may have to pay a penalty. Come to see a staff member to help apply for free or low-cost state health care programs. We can also help you to apply for Food Stamps. It is easy and quick! Sign up for an appointment at the front desk on the days listed—first come, first serve.

Resume Cover Letter Critique and Mock Interviews:  1. Have questions about your resume or cover letter? Bring your completed documents with you and a career counselor or employer will briefly review them with you, offer suggestions for improvement and answer your questions on a first-come-first-serve basis. 2. Need practice talking about your skills and abilities? Want a professional’s feedback on your interviewing skills? Bring your resume and a job description and sign-up for a half hour mock interview time slot. These sessions are offered several times a month. Check the calendar for dates.

Resume Writing Workshop: Learn what today’s employers are looking for when they read your resume. We’ll give you tips on different types of formats, and finding the one that is right for you.

Setting Up an E-mail Account: Learn how to set up an e-mail account and how to attach your resume to apply for jobs that request you to apply by E-mail. BASIC KEYBOARDING SKILLS ARE REQUIRED.

Skills Training Information Session: This workshop is targeted to those customers who are either collecting unemployment, working but receiving low income or minimum wage, or long-term unemployed who are looking for training options and/or assistance with their job search.

The Art of Writing a Thank You Letter: Writing an effective thank you letter to an employer can tip the scales in your favor, repair a mistake on an interview question and remind an employer why you are the perfect candidate for the job

Welcome Session: Introduction to The Work Place. This workshop is mandatory for membership. Get information about The Work Place’s services, policies and programs.

What is a Mouse? Learn how to use a mouse, move around, and open/ save files. A first step in using a computer effectively. This workshop is presented twice a month. Check front of calendar for dates.

VETERANS ONLY Workshop Series:  We offer monthly workshops open only to eligible veterans. Check the front of calendar for details.

Veteran’s Welcome Session: Learn how to utilize veterans’ services at your local one-stop career center and within your community.  Also learn how to work with the Veteran’s Representative to obtain and retain the necessary skills and tools to be successful in the workforce!
